10 Common Snacks That Sabotage Our Weight Loss Goals

May 6, 2013

3 o'clock hits and many of us get the munchies. But before you reach for that bag of pretzels, consider how many calories that snack packs and how hard you'll have to work to burn them off. Below are 10 common snacks that derail our weight loss goals.

Keep this in mind: for a 150-pound person, it takes 30 minutes of high impact aerobics to burn 238 calories. Enter your weight and activity to calculate your calories burned with this handy Calorie Burn Calculator.

Pretzels
There are 227 calories in only 10 pretzels! Admit it, we eat way more than 10.

Dried Fruit Mix
There are only 110 calories per serving but that's only 1/4 cup. Most of us eat a big handful (about a cup) which is nearly 450 calories!

12-ounce Orange Juice (Tropicana)
Think you're being healthy by chugging some orange juice? You're adding 170 calories to your diet for a 12-ounce bottle. Reach for water instead.

1 Bag of Microwave Buttered Popcorn
The smell of popcorn is hard to resist, but for 210 calories just say no. Remember, that will take you almost 30 minutes of high impact aerobics to burn off (for a 150-lb person)!

Dry-Roasted Peanuts
1/2 cup is a whopping 427 calories!

Rockstar Energy Drink
280 calories is not worth it. Plus, it's full of not-good-for-you garbage anyway.

Bagel with Cream Cheese
Sad but true. A bagel with cream cheese packs in 410 calories (more if you're as liberal with the cream cheese as I am).

Large Chocolate Chip Cookie
196 calories. Think bikini. Think bikini.

Starbuck's Blueberry Muffin
No, those blueberries do not make it any healthier. These full of sugar muffins are 380 calories.

Post-Work Beer
The typical 12-ounce beer has 150 calories, but who has just one?!
