A cream pie is a type of pie filled with a rich custard or pudding that is made from milk, cream, flour, and eggs. It can come in many forms, including vanilla, lemon, lime, banana, coconut, and chocolate. A constant feature of all cream pies is the whipped cream topping. The custard filling is related to the French crème patissière which is a key component of various French cakes and tarts.

cup + 3 tablespoons flaked coconut |
Step 1 |
Put 3 tablespoons of coconut in a pie tin and brown slightly; set aside. |
Step 2 |
Prepare pudding according to package directions; after pudding has come to a boil, add the 3/4 cup of coconut. Cool 5 minutes, stirring twice. Pour into cooled baked pie crust. Let cool for 3 hours. Add whipped cream or whipped topping over pie. Sprinkle the slightly-browned coconut on top. |
