Mom's Broccoli and Macaroni

Ingredients

1 pound penne pasta
1 pound broccoli, washed and trimmed
1/4 cup olive oil
4 cloves garlic, minced
1 tablespoon dried crushed red pepper (optional)

Preparation

In a large pot, boil pasta in salted water according to package directions. When "al dente," drain and set aside.

Steam broccoli 15-20 minutes, or until tender. Drain, reserving the broccoli water, and keep warm.

In a large saucepan, heat oil and garlic over medium heat until the garlic begins to sizzle.

Add crushed red pepper, penne, broccoli water, and broccoli to the pan. Simmer about 5 minutes.

Serve immediately, adding grated cheese and pepper to taste.
