Instructions
Step 1
Preheat oven to 250 degrees F. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper and set aside.
Step 2
Cut small and large heart shapes out of the day-old bread using cookie cutters. Lay the cut bread pieces on the lined cookie sheet. Toast in the oven for 4-5 minutes.
Step 3
Meanwhile, in a medium bowl, whisk the egg for 1 minute. Then add the buttermilk, oil, and orange extract, and whisk for 1 more minute.
Step 4
Add the flour, baking powder, sugar, and cinnamon to the bowl. Mix thoroughly and set aside.
Step 5
Lightly spray a skillet and place it on the stove over medium heat. Place one heart-shaped bread piece in the batter, turning it on both sides until well coated. Place the coated bread piece on the skillet. Repeat with the remaining bread pieces.
Step 6
Cook each piece for 2 minutes on the first side. Flip to the other side and cook for 1 more minute, or until golden brown. Repeat with the remaining pieces.
Step 7
Serve immediately with maple syrup.
