Chocolate cake is delicious on its own but filled with chocolate pudding and covered in chocolate cake crumbs and you have yourself the blackout cake. Brooklyn blackout cake was first made in Brooklyn, New York during World War II. The cake was named after the blackout drills performed by Civilian Defense Troops. Now, it is apart of 1950's food culture and still thriving in the Big Apple. My advice, don't forget a tall glass of milk.
Cake:
1 stick softened butter
1/4 cup vegetable shortening
2 cups sugar
3 eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 1/4 cups cake flour
1 cup milk
Filling:
3 cups water
2 1/2 cups sugar
1 tablespoon corn syrup
1 1/2 cups unsweetened cocoa powder
2/3 cup cornstarch
6 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into cubes
