Lutz Beet
About
A very popular variety for late season growing and winter storage. Roots are sweet, deep red and shaped somewhat like a top. The bright green glossy leaves are on chard-like midribs and make delicious greens. Lutz beets become sweeter during storage. Approximately 63 days to maturity.
This beet can get very large but never loses its sweetness. Very succulent greens. Can be overwintered in coastal and southern places, Lutz is a great beet to plant later in summer and to then winter-over in the ground (when protected with hay mulch). Very high in nutrients, both the roots and the tops contain many minerals, vitamins and fibre. We bake both the greens and the roots with caramelized onions in a tangy tomato sauce for a mouth-watering harvest dish.
