Bisquick is a pre-mixed baking product made by General Mills consisting of flour, shortening, salt, and baking powder.

Substitutes: One cup of bisquick can be substituted by a mix of the following ingredients: 1 c flour, 1 1/2 tsp baking powder, 1/2 tsp salt, 1 tbsp oil or melted butter.

Choosing: Check the expiration date of the product first before buying. A box of Bisquick (unopened) can last up to a year. Do not buy Bisquick with broken or damaged container.

For long-term storage, keep it in the refrigerator or freezer. If frozen, bring it to room temperature before using.


History: According to General Mills, Bisquick was born when one of their sales executives met a train dining car chef in 1930 who mixed lard and the dry ingredients for biscuits ahead of time. The recipe was adapted using hydrogenated oil, thus eliminating the need for refrigeration and officially introduced on grocer's shelves in 1931.

It is originally intended for making biscuits very quickly, hence its name.
