Magliocco Grapes

About

Magliocco is a red grape variety from the Calabria region in the south of Italy. It has been used mostly as a blending varietal, but there are now a handful of producers making wines using exclusively this grapes. Its wines have an aroma of dark fruit as well as a
taste of pepper and spice. Over the years, most growers planted more popular or international grape varietals and the Magliocco had almost disappeared from those lands where it had been growing for centuries. In terms of commercial production, Calabria’s output is perhaps the most minimal of all Italian wine regions. This lack of productivity derives, in part, from the difficulties its terrain presents for viticulture pursuits as well as its relatively poor economy. Despite these formidable challenges, however, Calabria possesses the potential to produce wines of quality—particularly reds. The food Pairings for these wines are pasta with meat sauces, Veal and rabbit dishes.
