Date and Almond Torte

Ingredients

Torte
8 tablespoons or 1 stick of butter (room temperature)
1 cup sugar
1 egg
1 cup flour
1/2 teaspoon mace
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
dash of salt (roughly 1/8 teaspoon)
Simple Syrup
1 cup water
1 cup sugar
2 tablespoons of the dry fruit tea blend (combination of rosehips, lemongrass, hibiscus,

Preparation

Heat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Cream butter and sugar together thoroughly before adding egg.

Sift together dry ingredients separately and incorporate by thirds into butter/sugar mixture

Fold in dates and almonds; batter will be thick and firm.

Turn into a greased 9 inch pie or cake pan and spread smooth.

Bake for 25 – 30 minutes, until just brown.

Simple Syrup

Put all the ingredients into a pot and heat on high, until it boils.

Remove from heat and let cool for at least one hour before using.

When cool, brush about 2 ounces of the syrup over the outside of the torte.

Serve remainder of the syrup on the side.

There was a torte filled with dates and almonds, brushed with a fruit tea infused simple syrup. The torte was reminiscent of baklava, a sinfully sweet, chewy dessert with a little bit of crunch.
