If you still have the packaging, check the sell by date..you don't want to eat it more than 2-3 days past that date at most.
When it does go bad, the color will change from red or pink to gray, it may also develop greenish mold or a whitish slimy exterior.
Given enough time a horrible odor will let you know that a steak has gone bad. When it's really bad, this is an odor that is unmistakable and will linger in the refrigerator for weeks.
