Have you ever faked a food allergy?

April 29, 2011

Who says chefs aren't funny? Details.com has a pretty hilarious interview with chef David Chang about the top-five most annoying things customers do. The whole list is pretty great. He, ahem, tears into food bloggers something fierce. But most surprising was his number three peeve, "Fake allergies."

There was that "Sex in the City" episode where Carrie annoyed her writer-boyfriend at a restaurant by faking a parsley allergy. But who knew all sorts of people were taking the food allergy route to cram their special requests down the kitchen's throat?

Food allergies are super serious and kill people, so it seems pretty crummy to use that as an excuse to alter a chef's recipe. But if you look at Chang's full list of grievances, it's hard not to think the worst of people. He drops about 20 f-bombs in a two-question interview and his total disgust for the people he serves somehow seems appropriate, and hilarious.

So, do tell. Have you ever faked a food allergy to get a special request? Confess in the comments below.
