Excursion #1: Capay Valley Ranches Farm Tour
Departing the hotel at 11 AM

One of California’s best kept secrets is the picturesque Capay Valley, a tranquil agricultural region nestled between the Napa and Sacramento Valleys.  We invite you to join us on a scenic tour through the olive groves, almonds and walnut trees that encompass our beautiful 400 planted-acre ranch.  Upon arrival, you will be greeted by the grower and ranch foreman and treated to an exclusive farm-fresh lunch, prepared using locally grown ingredients, including our very own Arbequina olive oil.  Next, you will be taken on a guided tour of the farm to learn about sustainable farming practices, innovative technology, and water conservation efforts.  There will be many opportunities for questions and photographs throughout the tour.  The tour will end back in Sacramento with each participant receiving a special gift bag containing a bottle of our certified extra virgin olive oil, as well as other items produced from the ranch.

FRIDAY EXCURSIONS
You will depart the hotel at 8am and return by 1:30pm. Transportation is provided.

Excursion #1: Farm-to-Fork Adventure through Historic Sacramento Delta

Experience America’s Farm-to-Fork Capital with an up-close look at one of California’s richest farming regions -- the Sacramento Delta. Our first stop will provide a unique look at America’s one-and-only commercial-scale producer of Belgian Endive (“on-deev”) at California Endive Farms in Rio Vista, California.  Company founder Rich Collins will provide some background and interesting facts about this intriguing crop while enroute to our first destination.  Once on-location, we will tour the unique indoor growing facility where the second stage of a two-step process renders endives from chicory roots. Next, we will travel back up Highway 160 through small communities situated along the historic Sacramento River levees to “pear country.”  Here the California Pear Advisory Board will show us hand-harvest and packing of fresh pears and introduce us to farming families who have been growing pears for generations in orchards planted as far back as California’s Gold Rush.

Last but certainly not least, guests will share a true Farm-to-Fork experience with farmers of locally-grown crops and wines in a picture-perfect setting at the heart of Sacramento’s Farm-to-Fork movement. The light lunch will include endive, pears, Delta-produced wines and other delicious locally-grown ingredients before we head back to the Capital City.

Excursion #2: Discover the “Gem of the Delta”, Clarksburg Wine Country

Join John Beckman, vintner and president, Clarksburg Wine Company and General Manager of the Old Sugar Mill in an exclusive food blogger experience that celebrates the farm to table experience while exploring ‘vineyard to bottle’.  Only 20 minutes from downtown Sacramento, Clarksburg is uncrowded and unspoiled with an authentic, laid back charm and hospitality. Your journey starts at 8am with an insider’s tour of Chenin Blanc and Petite Sirah vineyards that have staked their claim alongside the great wine growing regions of the world. With the Sacramento River to the east and beautiful vineyards to the west, your destination is the Old Sugar Mill, the Delta region's most distinct location. Four wineries are your hosts for the day and include Clarksburg Wine Company, Elevation Ten, Three Wine Company and Due Vigne De Famiglia.

After a vineyard and winery tour, enjoy a farm to table meal expertly prepared by a renown local chef in the Barrel room and learn directly from winemakers on the secrets of making great food friendly wines and pairing tips. Over the past decade, Clarksburg has quietly become the most reputable new world source of Chenin Blanc.  Gerald Asher, noted wine writer of Gourmet magazine wrote a riveting essay about Clarksburg CB: “The Right Grape in the Right Place.” You will return to your hotel deeply relaxed, senses sated by 1:30pm and ready for the afternoon program.
