The Boxcar. A classic Sidecar features brandy (or cognac, and we’re sure you know that all cognac is brandy but not all brandy is cognac), Cointreau, and lemon juice. But that nutmeg syrup just begs for brandy, and, with images of boxcars trundling north through the swamps of central Florida piled high with citrus, we felt that fresh oranges were a natural complement.

One of the things I love about winter (yes, there are things I love about winter) is the many varieties of citrus that find their way into supermarkets. Last week it was blood orange, today I found these lovely satsuma mandarins.

When you think of smoothies, the usual suspects come to mind: strawberry, banana-peanut butter, chocolate, blueberry, etc. Yesterday, I spied 1/2 cup of leftover pumpkin puree in my 'fridge and decided to do a deconstructed pumpkin pie, smoothie, sans crust.

Today’s cocktail recipe is a fancy version of a gin sour, but with the botanical addition of lavender. Lavender can be a great addition to a cocktail; it’s flowery but also has an earthy flavor that can nicely complement gin or other spirits.

Our woods are filled with plump deep blue sloe (blackthorn) berries, prugnole (or in local dialect brugnole). With stained sticky fingers, I gather them just in the nick of time during the late fall, waiting for them to be soft but not mealy and more importantly before the other booze makers can get to them!

There are plenty of choices out there; probably more than you can handle. For many, it is difficult to choose a wine off the shelf at your local store. Grapefruit, lime and ginger is not a combination I would have thought of without the help of Rose Bakery. This simple idea packs a punch, it is so bright and fresh. For a real treat, put the pitcher of juice in the freezer for about an hour before you plan on serving it.

Our fun punch recipe is based on Zay’s tita’s recipe… reverse engineered, and with our own little twists. That’s kind of the fun of it though – there’s no real way you can mess it up! As long as you keep topping it up with ice and juice (and booze) all night, it’ll be good to go. As we say… all roads lead to fun punch!

I don’t necessarily think that New Years means that you HAVE to immediately start dieting, but I feel like it is a good time to start out fresh. I like to refine my eating and exercising habits after the holiday bingeing is over.

I realized during the holidays I was drinking three cups of coffee a day along with almost a half cup of half & half. That’s a lot of calories and fat. Did I really need it? Not to mention the cost. Coffee is slowly creeping up there in price along with cream. Maybe I’ll kill two birds with one stone?

This drink is probably one of the prettiest drinks I’ve ever made. Not just because it’s in a martini glass (which automatically makes everything prettier), but it’s also pink, layered, has a sugar rim, and has a cherry in it. That’s just the perfect recipe for a pretty drink. It’s also really simple to make.

Put the the lime and orange cut in wedges in a Mojito glass (or if your muddler does not fit the Mojito glass like mine, do this in a separate bowl). Crush the lime and orange together to release their juices.

For the past several years, this right here has been our Christmas Eve tradition. After the family celebratin’ is all celebrated out and we’re back at home, warm in our PJ’s and cuddling with our sweet puppies, we whip up a batch of some kind of hot liquefied chocolate.

I usually buy enough booze for at least 3 batches, because the glasses aren’t overly sweet so they go down smooth and easy. Keep in mind when preparing the drink that the recipe calls for the main ingredients minus the champagne to be chilled for at least 4 hours prior drinking, keeping it nice and chilly with no ice cube dilution.

A party is not complete without booze. I still remember the drink I prepared for my first house warming party was a Bellini, prepared with peach puree and champagne. I was not totally into cooking then but still managed to wow my guests with curry chicken and beef rendang prepared with Prima pre-mixed paste....
