Crimson Sweet Watermelon
About
The crimson sweet watermelon is light green with characteristically dark green stripes. Their flesh is firm and fine textured when ready for harvest about 80 days afterseeing. When planying the crimson sweet watermelon, it is smart to start them indoors in peat pots about 3 to 4 weeks before the last spring frost. The watermelon averages 21-25 pounds per fruit and provides a sweet, crisp taste. The specific species is not available commercially, because grocery story fruit is bred as hybrids in order to gain longer shelf life. When planting the crimson sweet watermelon, make sure there is plenty of room for vines to grow. Come harvest time, there are a few tricks to determine whether a melon is ripe. First, check the 'ground spot' on the fruit, where it has been lying in the garden. The spot should be a creamy golden color if it is ripe. Secondly, the vine tendrils closest to the melon should be dried up and brown. In addition, the skin should be thick enough that it is resistant to prodding with your fingernail. Finally, you can cut a small plug into the inside of the melon to check the flesh of the fruit.
