Clean the onions and remove the inedible skins, but keep whole. Bring a pot of water to a boil and add the onions. Cook until slightly soft all the way through, but not mushy. You can test by inserting a toothpick or skewer. Once cooked to the desired firmness, stop cooking process by immersing in ice water.
