A ripe avocado will stay fresh for up to two days in the refrigerator, if wrapped tightly, or put in an air-tight container. Adding lime juice, or a product containing citric acid, such as Fruit Fresh will help it retain its color. Another trick is to leave the seed in the container, along with the slice or mashed avocado.
