Alum- in it's chemical form is potassium aluminum sulfate. Granulated alum is commonly used in pickling recipes to help keep the pickle crispy. This would be your most common use. It is also found in some baking powders for it's acidity.
Medicinally- a small dab can help to clear up canker sores in the mouth.
