Ode to the Onion

July 22, 2011

Any soup, stock, or sauce recipe almost always starts out by sauteing onions.  The onion is the flavor base to an endless array of dishes.  I can't think of a single country or culture that does not use an onion or one of its cousins in their daily cooking.  I thought today I would pay tribute to this most versatile of ingredients.  Here are 5 recipes that highlight the onion's flavor and make it the star.

French Onion Soup
A classic recipe that places the onion on center stage.

Red Onion Marmalade
The perfect condiment for burgers, sandwiches, or a cheese platter.

Carmalized Onion and Bacon Tart
A great dish to serve at a picnic or brunch.

Bloomin' Onion

Tomato and Onion Salad
A refreshing salad that can be served with any dish.
