An Election Night Whisky Cocktail Recipe

Finally, it’s election day. The last 18 months have undoubtedly been the most stressful and contentious our nation has seen in a race for the Presidency. In my world, the best way to seek comfort is with food.

Or drink….

Incalculable emails touting election night cocktail recipes have been sent my way the last few days, but for me, I don’t want some festive and fun red, white and blue concoction that's more akin to a Fourth of July party; things are much too serious for that today. I need something simple, something strong, something adult. Something to numb the nerves, anesthetize the angst.


Regardless of who will win (oh, please, please let it be my candidate!!) or lose, the important thing to remember is that, at the end of the day, we are all in this together.

And that there is plenty of whisky to go around.

So have a bottle of Champagne chilling in the fridge for your celebration (and hopefully mine), but before dinner pull out the whisky and make the following cocktail, which is a blend of Japanese whisky, sherry, bitters and simple syrup.   

Rita's Song Whisky Cocktail

The story behind this cocktail recipe (read it here) is one of love, opposition, overcoming adversity, and building something great together. I thought it an apropos recipe to share in light of tonight’s event.

2 ounces Nikka Taketsuru Pure Malt 12 Year Old Whisky

1.2 ounce 15 Year Old Sherry

2 dashes Dr. Adam's Boker's bitters
1/4 ounce simple syrup

Shake or stir and serve on 1-2 large ice cubes.
