Question: How can you tell if uncooked duck has gone "bad"

January 10, 2011
I bought a unfrozen duckiling on 12-31-10 and for got I had it until 1-10-11. I opened it up to cook and while it appears okay, I'm not sure if it is still okay to cook and eat. There is a slight odor, but not being familar with duckling, I'm not sure if this is the way it normally smells or if this is an indication that it has become spoiled? Can anyone give me some insights on whether it might be okay?

There is usually an expiration date on the package- which is a good indicator. In my mind, 10 days is a long time for poultry and since you generally eat duck a little pink- unlike chicken -which you cook through, you're right to be suspicious. Duck will smell a little "gamier" and bloodier than chicken when raw.
Rinse it lightly, does it feel really slimy? is the odor overwhelming. It may be fine- but after rinsing it and smelling it again, if you are still doubtful, then pass on it. You can also call the meat dept at the store where you purchased the duck and inquire with the butcher.
