There are some good videos (free) on YouTube. Try searching for Food Plating Techniques. I also never buy a cookbook that does not have excellent photos! If I've never made it before, how will I know if it looks right? I browse multiple magazines for not only recipes, techniques and articles- I look for the pictures too! Some of the ones I browse (both online and in print) are: Food and Wine, Bon Appetite, Gourmet, Martha Stewart, Eating Well, Simple, Donna Hay, Savuer, ect. Most are available at the library too.
Watch some of the Cooking shows on TV. There are some great techniques to be learned- and they are demonstrated live for you. Browse restaurant menus online- they often have pictures too.

Food Photographers always have amazing plating photos for you to study. Generally follow the rule of thirds for a pleasing arrangement. Visually divide the plate into thirds, like a peace symbol, and place one item in each section. Vary colors, textures, and heights for interest. Think about having bright colors - greens, reds, yellows, oranges, etc. Use lettuce leaves under white products like potato salad for example to add color to the plate. You almost always see a sprig of mint on a dessert to add a pop of color. Get creative and have fun!
