In 1950:
The average house price was $1,949.
Average yearly salary $3,210
Gallon of gas .18
Average cost of a new car $1,510
Black & White TV $249.95
Bananas - 2 lbs for 27 cents
Campbell's tomato soup - 10 cents
Chuck roast - 59 cents a lb.
Loaf of bread - 12 cents
Oranges - 24 for 69 cents
Kelloggs Shredded Wheat - 18 cents
Potatoes - 10 lbs for 35 cents
Toilet Paper - 5 cents a roll
Sugar 5 lbs for 43 cents

What I really find interesting is the the price of a house and car combined was just slightly more than the average salary. By 1999 the average house price was $131,750 and the average salary was $40,810. Now a house costs more than 3 times the average salary. No wonder so many people have gotten into finacial trouble.
