Question: How do I neutralize over spiced pork loin?

August 10, 2010
I purchased three pork loin already spiced and ready to go. The spice is so overpowering we can't even eat it. I still have two and being wrapped in saran wrap and in a freezer bag it is still causing a strong odor in my freezer.

First rinse them off- this should help with the smell and lessen the taste. If they're brined- try soaking them in water to see if you can get rid of some of the brine that's soaked in - you might also try apple juice- at least you'd add some sweetness. If they are covered in a spice rub, removing some or all of the rub should help.- you can trim a thin layer with a knife to physically remove it.
I don't like buying pre-seasoned meats for this very reason.

Thank-you so much for your help. A lesson learned. I will definitely give all of your suggestions a try.

I have soaked what I kept out of the first one in water but it is still pretty strong. I am hoping if I remove the rub and soak them before I cook them it will work.

I think apple juice is a good idea. Rinse first then put in slow cooker with apple cider and sum sliced apples, and add cubed squash or yams

The best way to prevent this from happening is to buy a 'naked' pork loin and season it in a way that you like. Something pre-marinated could be marinated for an hour or a week. Commercial marinades must contain preserving chemicals (usually sodium based) which will affect the product in negative ways not to mention the negative ways they will affect your health. Marinate your own.
