Scotch bonnet chiles (very close) or manzana chiles can be used as a substitute for habanero chiles. Serrano peppers or jalepenos may also be used if you double the amount called for in the recipe.
Depending on the recipe, you can substitute chipotle peppers. They have a lot of heat as well as a nice smoky adobo sauce. Serrano or thai chilis, and jalapenos will work. The heat of fresh peppers vary. You never really know what you get until you try them.
