$500 Jelly Beans

May 21, 2011

Years after he created the Jelly Belly jelly bean, reclusive creator David Klein has announced plans for what he calls "the world's most expensive jelly bean." Each bean will be coated in a 24 karat gold shell and the jar will be made of crystal. Each will retail for $500.

Klein plans to unveil this new product, called Beyond Gourmet Jelly Beans, at the Sweets & Snacks Expo in Chicago later this month. In order to ensure security, the jelly beans will be kept under "armed guard." So, what do they taste like?

According to the press release, "Influenced by food deconstruction masters such as Jose Andreas and Ferran Adria of El Bulli, David’s ‘Beyond Gourmet' jelly beans will enable one to create haute cuisine and exotic dishes using the taste elements of each jelly bean. It’s beyond candy! It’s literally an exotic trip around the world though the sense of taste via never-before-tasted jelly bean flavors."

Klein was the focus on a recent documentary called "Candy Man." Take a look at the trailer below.
