2 Year Old Killed By German E Coli Outbreak

June 14, 2011

After days in intensive care, a two-year-old boy in Germany is the latest to die from the German e coli outbreak, bringing the death toll to 37.

The boy's family was also sickened, but are expected to recover from the particularly virulent strain of e coli that causes kidney failure. Officials say more than 100 people sickened from the contamination will either require kidney transplants or spend the rest of their lives on dialysis.

Heiner Garg, health minister in the northern state of Schlewsig-Holstein said it's impossible to know how many people will ultimately have long-term damage as a result of the e coli. Others are said to be suffering from neurological damage.
