Members of the Berkley College Republicans object to SB 185, which would "authorize California public universities to consider race, gender, ethnicity, and national/geographic origin in the admissions process." So, they decided to host a bake sale that made different racial groups pay different amounts for baked goods. Republicans said they were being satirical, but many believe they were being racist and offensive.
That event is going on right now and you can read live coverage of it on the Daily Californian's live blog.
Under their original plan for the event, which has since been retooled, the bake sale would over a different price structure to different groups on campus:
-White/Caucasian students, $2 for each baked good.
-Asians/Asian-Americans, $1.50.
-Latinos/Hispanics, $1.
-Blacks/African-Americans, 75 cents.
-Native Americans, 25 cents.
-And, they're taking 25 cents off for women.
The Berkley student council voted 19-0 to condemn the bake sale. Even the former president of the College Republicans did not approve of the event.
“We’re not open to being reduced to a price at a bake sale,” said Salih Muhammad, chair of the campus Black Student Union. “There’s a certain point where satire becomes disrespectful.”
What do you think of the bake sale?
