Question: is there a substitute for buttermilk for cooking?

You can mix yoghurt with water or milk to get a similar effect. Another option is milk with a bit of lemon or white vinegar.

It depends a bit on the recipe. What are you making?

To make your own buttermilk:

4 1/2 TSP WHITE VINEGAR OR FRESH LEMON JUICE
1 CUP MILK

PLACE THE VINEGAR OR LEMON JUICE IN A GLASS MEASURING CUP. ADD MILK TO EQUAL 1 CUP TOTAL LIQUID. STIR. LET STAND 15-20 MINUTES.
USE AS NEEDED OR REFRIGERATE UNTIL NEEDED.

Buttermilk

1 tbsp of white distilled vinegar or fresh lemon juice
1 cup of milk

Mix and let it stand for 5 minutes. ^^

Buttermilk
If you add vinegar or lemon juice to milk, it will curdle.

Buttermilk is diluted yogurt, add water to yogurt and mix well.
