Australia is now testing genetically modified wheat and barley, but the details of how the genes were altered is top secret. The three year experiement is protected by commerical confidental agreements. The CSRIO is growing 14 different strains of wheat and barley, and they claim that they have precautions to keep them separate from non-GMO varieties.
"The trial has been criticized by environmental groups and some organic farmers, who say there is no known way to stop the altered wheat and barley from mixing with natural strains and ''contaminating'' a swathe of Australia's wheat crop".
