Sauteed Chicken In Red Wine Sauce

1 chicken (3 ½ lb.) cut into pieces
Salt and white pepper
2 tablespoons butter
1/4 pound mushrooms (leave whole)
16 sm. white onions, peeled
2 teaspoons (chopped finely) garlic
2 tablespoons flour
2 tablespoons cognac
1 1/2 cups dry red wine
1 1/2 cups chicken broth
