Thanksgiving Without The Can

November 27, 2013

Green Bean Casserole is the quintessential side dish for many American Thanksgiving tables. This year, you may have heard about the study showing how much of our canned foods contain BPA. This is especially alarming when you consider that some of our favorite things for Thanksgiving: Green Bean Casserole and Pumpkin Pie recipes, usually include a canned item.

If you want to make Green Bean Casserole without using a can of soup, simply replace the soup with my recipe for Cream of Anything Soup Base. Then, use frozen beans instead of canned (frozen veg is under appreciated. It is really healthy and the least expensive to buy). I think you are good with the French's Onions, but you could always deep fry some superfine onion straws.

Cranberry sauce is a must have, so if you want to make it yourself and ditch the can (I am going with the canned AND homemade.) Here are some recipes to make your own:

Cranberry Hibiscus Sauce

Smoky Jalepeno Cranberry Sauce

Spiced Cranberry Sauce With Oranges, Pecans and Port

Gravy is super easy. Do not make it from a can or jar. Here is a video for making perfect gravy

Pumpkin pie can be made from a fresh pumpkin with ease. Check out how to make your own pumpkin puree. It takes mere minutes.

I am not certain what else you could possibly get from a can on Thanksgiving. If I missed something, let me know!
